District Announcements
Dr. Danny Merck Named New Superintendent
We're happy to introduce Dr. Danny Merck as the new Superintendent of the School District of Pickens County. Dr. Merck comes to the position with 23 years of experience in education, most of which were spent right here in the district. Dr. Merck has served in roles including teacher, coach, principal and district administrator. For the past two years, he has been the principal of Daniel High School.
He will officially step into his new leadership role on May 1. Until then, he will work with the board of trustees and our current Superintendent, Dr. Kelly Pew, to ensure a smooth transition.

Changes To School Calendar!
The 2013-2014 School Calendar was revised for the remainder of the school year on March 24. These calendars reflect changes because of snow days. We are using all three of the snow days that were built into the calendar at the start of the year, and the remaining snow days were forgiven by the board.

Key Changes:
  • School ends on June 6.
  • Exams (except for seniors) will be from June 3-6.
  • Schools will be open on April 21, May 23 and June 6.
  • Several grading period and report card dates have shifted.

Seventh Grade Grows Vertical Garden
Seventh grade students in Mrs. Ellison's and Mrs. Kurfess's classes have started a vertical garden in the patio outside their classrooms. Students have been collecting containers for the last few weeks, and they have also been growing seedlings inside. This week they transplanted the seedlings to repurposed milk jugs and soda bottles which they are hanging from the brick wall just outside their classroom. See the full story on Week 29 of The Panther.
